Grand Morgon, Mountain peak in French Alps, France
Grand Morgon is a mountain peak in the French Alps standing at 2,324 meters and positioned between the communes of Pontis and Savines-le-Lac in southeastern France. From the top, the surrounding landscape of ridges and valleys opens up in all directions.
The peak served for a long time as a natural border marker between the departments of Hautes-Alpes and Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. This geographical division was established during France's administrative reorganization.
Local mountaineering groups organize annual summer expeditions to Grand Morgon, teaching participants about Alpine navigation and safety protocols.
The hike to the summit starts from Savines-le-Lac and follows marked trails through the Morgon cirque area. The climb requires several hours of steady physical effort and is best attempted in dry conditions.
From the summit, two remarkable structures come into view: the historic Abbey of Boscodon and the large reservoir Serre-Ponçon. The artificial lake was created by damming the Durance River and appears from above like a big blue expanse in the mountain landscape.
