Église Sainte-Anne de Châtel-Guyon, Church in Châtel-Guyon, France

The église Sainte-Anne de Châtel-Guyon is a church located on the Place de l'Église in the small town of Châtel-Guyon, in the Auvergne region of France. The building follows a long, narrow plan with three naves that lead to a semicircular apse at the far end.

An earlier church on this site was destroyed by fire, and the current building began to take shape in 1308. Major works followed in the 19th century, while the interior decoration was added much later, during the 20th century.

The interior paintings were made by Nikolaï Greschny, a 20th-century artist inspired by Byzantine iconography and Italian fresco traditions. His works cover nearly every wall and vault, depicting scenes from the Old and New Testaments as well as the life of Mary.

The church sits right in the center of Châtel-Guyon and is easy to reach on foot from most parts of town. Visiting outside of service times gives you more freedom to walk around and look at the interior paintings at your own pace.

The church is dedicated to Saint Anne, the mother of Mary, whose veneration has deep roots in this region going back many centuries. Greschny drew on Byzantine traditions for his paintings, giving the interior a look that feels closer to an Eastern Orthodox church than a small French town church.
