Martyrium of Saint Denis, Montmartre

The Martyrium of Saint Denis contains a subterranean chapel with three ancient graves marked by crosses and religious inscriptions from early Christian times.

Archaeological excavations at the site revealed numerous Christian burials from a quarry known as the Martyrium, where Saint Denis was executed in the third century.

On August 15, 1534, Ignatius of Loyola and Francis Xavier made their religious vows in this chapel, leading to the creation of the Jesuit order.

The crypt opens to visitors every Friday afternoon through the Association de la Crypte du Martyrium de Saint Denis et du Souvenir de Saint Ignace de Loyola.

A staircase discovered during 16th-century construction work leads to an underground chamber that contained evidence of early Christian religious practices in Paris.
