Château de Buillon, Medieval castle in Chenecey-Buillon, France

Château de Buillon stands on the right bank of the Loue River with a Renaissance facade and classical columns framing its entrance. The property spreads across extensive grounds featuring walking paths, a water basin, and various outbuildings.

The building was originally constructed as a palace for the Benedictine abbey Notre-Dame de Billon in medieval times. After the French Revolution, it passed into private hands and underwent several transformations under its new owners.

The castle served as a retreat for the painter James Tissot, who shaped its grounds with romantic additions that reflected his artistic vision and personal tastes.

This property remains a private residence closed to visitors, though the surrounding landscape and river area can be appreciated from public viewpoints. The grounds are best observed from external vantage points along the riverbank.

The painter James Tissot spent his final years here and was buried in the castle's private chapel after his death in 1902. His presence left a lasting mark on the property's collections and interior arrangement.
