Château de Périlhac, château français situé à Penne
Château de Périlhac is a castle ruin from the 13th and 14th centuries near Penne, sitting on a promontory 400 meters above the plain. The remains show two groups of buildings including an old keep with a watchtower featuring spiral staircase bases, Renaissance windows, arrow slits, and traces of medieval fireplaces, plus the foundation of a Templar chapel by an ancient roadway.
The site was inhabited before medieval times, possibly as an ancient fort, before being given to the Knights Templar in the 12th century. During the 13th and 14th centuries, the fortress was expanded and strengthened, then gradually transitioned to agricultural use from the 15th century onward until it fell into decline.
The site is private property and not open for visits, but the ruins can be explored from outside. It remains visible on maps and satellite images, which allows you to see its location and general state.
Nearby stood a Templar chapel built on an ancient water source, showing how sacred sites were often placed where natural resources were available. This blend of spiritual purpose and practical location was typical of Templar settlements throughout the region.
