Château Saint Georges, Historical winery and château in Montagne, France
Château Saint Georges is a winery and château in Montagne covering about 45 hectares of vineyards planted on clay-limestone soil. The property sits several kilometers from Saint Emilion and is roughly 35 minutes from Bordeaux by car.
The property traces its roots to the Gallo-Roman period, when the Latin poet Ausone owned a villa here that overlooked the vineyards. His writings about Bordeaux wines rank among the earliest written records of the region's wine tradition.
The estate produces two distinct wines that reflect different vine ages: the main Château Saint Georges blend comes from mature vines, while Château Puy Saint Georges is made from younger Merlot grapes. Visitors can taste these differences firsthand and see how vine maturity shapes the final product.
During a visit, guests can tour the aromatic garden and taste different wine varieties produced on the grounds. Year-round, guided visits explain how grapes are grown and processed into wine.
The neoclassical façade was designed by Victor Louis, the same architect who built Bordeaux's Grand Theatre. Four towers from the original feudal castle remain standing, offering reminders of the property's medieval past.
