Château d'Avranches, Medieval castle in Avranches, France

Château d'Avranches is a castle ruin on a hilltop in the town, featuring a crenelated tower from the 13th century. From this vantage point, views extend across Normandy, and visitors can see old wall sections that trace back to Roman times.

The fortress was founded around 950 when Onfroi Le Dane constructed it upon Roman foundations already present at the site. These early structures shaped the location for centuries to come and demonstrate the long history of settlement in the area.

The ruin takes its name from the town and stands on Roman foundations, with ancient stones still visible in its structure. Local residents visit regularly to enjoy the views and connect with the history of their region.

The ruin is freely accessible and visitors can explore the grounds and reach the observation platform. Benches and green spaces are available for resting, making it a pleasant spot to pause during a walk through town.

On clear days, the silhouette of Mont-Saint-Michel can be seen in the distance, rising above the flat Norman landscape. This view connects two of the region's most recognizable landmarks in a single glance.
