Rocher Corneille

Rocher Corneille is a volcanic plug rising about 80 meters above the city of Le Puy-en-Velay and forming a distinctive landmark of the region. A large metal statue of Mary stands on its summit, towering over the town.

The statue of Mary was assembled in the mid-1800s from metal parts that originally came from military sources. The volcanic plug itself formed millions of years ago during intense volcanic activity in this area.

The rock marks a key point on the pilgrimage path of St James, where many walkers begin or continue their spiritual journey. For the city, this place is a symbol that has shaped its identity across many generations.

Visiting requires climbing a narrow spiral staircase inside the statue, which is not suitable for people with limited mobility. It is best to come early in the morning when fewer people are present and the views can be clearer.

The statue is made from melted military weapons collected after a war, making it an unexpected monument with a dark origin story. This reuse of war materials as artwork was a remarkable sign of transformation at its time.
