Piton Central of Aiguille du Midi

The Piton Central reaches an elevation of 3,842 meters and forms part of the Aiguille du Midi peak in the Mont Blanc mountain range.

The first mountaineers reached the summit in 1818, marking the beginning of alpine exploration in this section of the French Alps.

The peak received its name because the sun passes directly over its summit at noon when observed from the Chamonix church square.

Visitors access the summit through a two-stage cable car system that holds the record for the highest vertical ascent of 2,807 meters.

The summit station features an elevator carved inside the rock that transports visitors the final 42 meters to the top terrace.
