Kangerlussuaq Airport, International airport in Qeqqata, Greenland.
Kangerlussuaq Airport is an international aerodrome in Qeqqata, central-western Greenland, serving both overseas and domestic connections. The asphalt runway extends long enough to handle large aircraft and sits within a flat tundra landscape.
The facility was built in 1941 as Bluie West-8, an American military base during the Second World War. After decades of military use, control passed to Greenlandic civil authorities in 1992.
The name comes from Greenlandic words meaning "big fjord", describing the deep waterway that shapes the surrounding landscape. Travelers here experience the transition between international connections and the vast arctic wilderness visible through terminal windows.
The terminal stays open around the clock during summer months and offers lodging through Hotel Kangerlussuaq directly inside the building. Travelers should bring clothing for changeable arctic weather, as temperatures remain cool throughout the year.
The inland location protects operations from the frequent fog that affects many coastal airports in Greenland. Caribou herds occasionally cross the open ground around the runway, prompting pilots to scan the area before landing.
