Kangerlussuaq Fjord

Kangerlussuaq Fjord is a deep waterway stretching 190 kilometers through western Greenland with widths varying between 1.5 and 8 kilometers. The waters are fed by the Qinnguata Kuussua river, which carries sediments from the Greenland ice sheet.

The region contains archaeological evidence of Inuit settlements from several centuries ago, when communities relied on marine resources. These early inhabitants established the human presence that continues to this day.

The waters and shores here remain places where fishing communities continue methods passed down through generations. Visitors can observe these traditional practices as part of daily life in the area.

The fjord remains accessible year-round via Kangerlussuaq Airport, which serves as the main gateway for visitors to the region. Summer offers the most favorable conditions for travel and activities.

The water displays an emerald-green color created by fine sediments from the ice sheet that the river Qinnguata Kuussua continuously brings downstream. This coloration is most striking during summer when snowmelt intensifies.
