Pindus National Park

Pindus National Park, National park in northwestern Greece.

Pindus National Park is a large protected area in northwestern Greece that encompasses multiple mountain ranges including Smolika, Tymfi, and Mitsikeli. The territory spreads across two regional units with diverse terrain featuring forests, rivers, and steep hillsides.

People have inhabited this region since the Stone Age, as evidenced by ancient tools and weapons discovered in river caves. Continuous settlement over millennia shaped the landscape and led to the development of today's communities.

The traditional villages scattered through the park display stone houses and chapels that show how communities have lived and built here for generations.

The park has multiple entry points from the north, south, east, and west that connect via regional roads. Planning your route helps you explore the different areas and terrain types available throughout the park.

The area shelters more than 2000 plant species, including rare plants that thrive on the heavy metal-rich soils of ophiolite rock formations. These specialized plants evolved in locations with unusual geological conditions.
