Averoff Gallery, Art museum in Metsovo, Greece
The Averoff Gallery is an art museum in Metsovo that houses more than 700 artworks by Greek artists spanning the 19th and 20th centuries. The collection brings together paintings, drawings, sculptures, and engravings that reflect different moments in modern Greek artistic development.
The museum was founded by Evangelos Averoff-Tossizza and opened in 1988 as a center for displaying Greek art in the region. An expansion in 1994 added a new wing to the building, allowing the institution to present its growing collection more fully.
The permanent exhibition features works from notable Greek painters including Gyzis, Tsokos, Doukas, Rallis, Lytras, Volanakis, and Iakovidis, representing Greek artistic movements.
The gallery welcomes visitors during daytime hours with clear access points at the entrance and facilities adapted for people with mobility needs. Plan to spend a couple of hours to explore the collection without rushing through the exhibits.
The exhibition 'Travels in Metsovo' by photographer Kostas Balafas displays rare photographs from the 1960s and 1970s documenting everyday life in the town. These images offer an intimate window into the past and reveal how daily routines and the community evolved over decades.
