The museum was created in 2001 through collaboration between Tampere City, Tampere University, Elisa telephone company, and Aamulehti newspaper. It opened officially in 2003 as an institution dedicated to preserving media history.
The name comes from Rupriikki, a former industrial area in Tampere that became a cultural destination. The exhibition traces how Finnish people communicated across generations, from newspapers to contemporary media.
