Sevettijärvi, Skolt Sámi settlement in Inari, Finland.
Sevettijärvi is a Skolt Sámi settlement in Inari located in the northern part of Finland's Lapland, surrounded by lakes and forests in a remote region. The community sits within a landscape dominated by water and woodland, with rocky terrain characteristic of this far northern location.
The settlement was established in 1949 when 51 Skolt Sámi families relocated here from Petsamo following the shift in territorial boundaries after World War II. This relocation created the foundation of today's community, which took root in this remote corner of northern Finland.
The community here speaks Skolt Sámi as their main language, a tradition passed down through families and daily life in the settlement. Orthodox Christian practices shape local customs and celebrations, visible in how people observe religious traditions.
Travel to the settlement works best during warmer months, as access becomes difficult during long winter periods with heavy snow and limited daylight. Visitor facilities are minimal in the area, so advance planning and self-reliance are needed when visiting.
The community received its first road connection only in the late 1960s, replacing earlier transportation methods like reindeer sleds and Bombardier snowmobiles. This isolation shaped how long the settlement remained cut off from the wider world.
