Mikkeli Cathedral

Mikkeli Cathedral is a brick building with Gothic Revival design that seats about 1,200 people and features a bell tower on the western gable. The interior is spacious and bright with substantial brick walls and a structural design that uses the space efficiently.

Finnish architect Josef Stenbäck designed and built the cathedral between 1896 and 1897 on Ristimäki hill in central Mikkeli. The building emerged during a period when Gothic Revival styles were popular across Scandinavia and shaped the religious architecture of the region.

The cathedral displays an altar painting by Finnish artist Pekka Halonen created in 1899 called 'Crucified' and houses a large organ from 1956. These artworks shape the interior and reflect the artistic tastes of the period.
