Saint George Church in Mariehamn, Lutheran church in Mariehamn, Finland.
Saint George Church is a Lutheran place of worship in Mariehamn with symmetrical facades and six pointed windows running along each main wall. The steep copper-covered roof dominates the exterior, while inside you find religious artwork in glass and wood.
The church began construction in 1926 following a major donation that made the project possible and a formal ceremony led by a bishop. The building was completed as religious communities on the Åland Islands expanded during that era.
Inside, you can see glass paintings of apostles and religious symbols etched on wooden panels throughout the walls. A colorful glass mosaic above the altar shows scenes from Jesus's life.
The building is fully wheelchair accessible for visitors exploring the interior spaces. A large organ installed in 1969 is one of the biggest musical instruments in the Åland Islands.
The church sits at the intersection of two main streets and breaks from typical religious building orientation by facing north instead of east. This unusual positioning makes it a notable exception in how churches on the islands are usually planned.
