Pyhätunturi, Fell and mountain summit in Pelkosenniemi, Finland

Pyhätunturi is an elongated fell that stretches roughly 10 kilometers from east to west, with its highest peak Noitatunturi reaching 540 meters above sea level. The ridge features varied terrain including steep slopes, valleys, and distinct rock formations throughout its length.

The mountain formations originated over two billion years ago as part of an ancient mountain range that has been shaped by erosion across vast timescales. The hard quartzite that remains today is what has survived this long process of geological change.

The mountain holds deep meaning in Sámi tradition as a sacred place where offerings were made and spiritual practices occurred at locations such as Uhriharju and Karhunjuomalampi. This heritage shapes how visitors understand and move through the landscape today.

The mountain offers well-marked hiking trails suitable for different fitness levels and ski slopes with lifts during winter. Accommodation, restaurants, and equipment rental are available on-site, making it convenient for visitors to spend time exploring.

Nestled between Kultakero and Ukonhattu peaks is Isokuru, a steep-walled gorge nearly one kilometer long with wooden boardwalks built along its rocky bottom. This hidden feature reveals the dramatic geological contrasts within the mountain's landscape.
