Lemmenjoki National Park

Lemmenjoki National Park extends across 2,850 square kilometers of Nordic wilderness, featuring pine forests, rivers, mountains, and extensive wetlands.

The establishment of the national park in 1956 followed a period of gold mining activities that brought prospectors to the region in the early 20th century.

The park territory holds traditional significance for the Sámi people, who maintain their cultural practices and connections to this northern landscape.

Visitors can explore 60 kilometers of marked trails throughout the park and utilize ten free wilderness huts for overnight stays during their expeditions.

The park contains two small airfields, Martiniiskonpalo and Keurulainen, which serve approximately 100 gold diggers who work on 40 claims during summer months.
