Vammala, former municipality of Finland, now part of Sastamala
Vammala is a former municipality in the Pirkanmaa region of Finland, now part of the city of Sastamala. Its center sits on both sides of the Kokemäenjoki River, where older buildings and everyday shops stand side by side in a forested setting.
The area around Vammala was first recorded in royal documents around 1300 and was once one of the largest parishes in the neighboring region of Satakunta. Over the following centuries it remained a local center before joining other municipalities to form Sastamala in 2009.
The former town is known today as a center for books and literature in the region. The Pukstaavi Book Museum traces the history of Finnish writing and printing, and an annual book festival brings readers and writers together each year.
The former town center is easy to reach by train from Tampere, Pori, or Helsinki, and the station sits close to the main area. Once there, the banks of the Kokemäenjoki River and the nearby lakes are good for a walk at any time of year.
Vammala was founded as a market town in 1915 and received formal town status in 1965, giving it fewer than 50 years of independent existence before merging into Sastamala. Few Finnish towns went through that full arc, from market settlement to chartered town to dissolved municipality, in such a short span.
