Raseborg Castle, Medieval castle in Snappertuna, Finland

Raseborg Castle is a stone fortress built on a rocky outcrop along the Finnish coast, featuring towers and multi-level defensive walls. The complex was expanded over time with different sections designed to strengthen control of this strategic location.

The fortress was founded before 1378 by Bo Jonsson and monitored trade routes across the Gulf of Finland while serving as an administrative center. It declined in importance after the 1500s and eventually became an archaeological site.

The castle grounds host summer festivals featuring medieval markets, concerts, and theatrical performances on one of Finland's largest outdoor stages. Visitors experience cultural events that blend historical traditions with contemporary entertainment throughout the season.

The grounds are accessible year-round, with the best visiting conditions during the warmer months from June to August. Wear sturdy shoes since paths cross rocky areas, and weather can change quickly throughout the day.

A restaurant at the base of the fortress was established in 1893 and ranks among Finland's earliest tourist facilities. The building demonstrates how early visitors were drawn to explore this location.
