Villa Skeppet, Modernist residential building in Raseborg, Finland
Villa Skeppet is a modernist residential building in Raseborg distinguished by its characteristic sail-shaped roof that connects different sections of the structure. Large windows open toward a garden and sea views, while the interior reveals a thoughtfully composed spatial flow with integrated living areas.
Finnish architect Alvar Aalto designed this residence in 1969 for his friends Christine and Göran Schildt as his final residential project. The building emerged as the culmination of Aalto's long career and demonstrates his mature design principles.
The name "Skeppet" means "The Ship" and mirrors the sail-shaped roof that defines the building's profile. This form creates a visual impression as if the villa hovers above the landscape.
The Christine and Göran Schildt Foundation manages the building at Snäcksundsvägen 8 and offers access by advance reservation only. Visitors should book in advance to experience a guided tour of the interior.
The fireplace in the main living room was personally carved from stone by Alvar Aalto, showcasing his craftsmanship in detail. This handcrafted element gives the space a particular warmth and reveals Aalto's attention to every aspect of the design.
