Upinniemi, village and garrison in Kirkkonummi, Finland
Upinniemi is a small village in Kirkkonummi on the coast of the Gulf of Finland and hosts an active naval base with docks, ships, and functional military buildings. The terrain spreads across flat land with grassy fields and small forests, where residences and naval facilities mix and harbor activity shapes daily life.
The region was leased by the Soviet Union as Porkkala Naval Base from 1944 to 1956, after which Finland regained control and repurposed the site. Following the war, the Finnish naval base developed here and now serves as headquarters for the Gulf of Finland Naval Command and a key center for maritime defense.
The village carries the Swedish name Obbnäs, reflecting the historical presence of Swedish-speaking Finns in the region. This linguistic duality appears on local signs and maps, blending Finnish and Swedish traditions into the everyday identity of the place.
Access to the base is restricted for security reasons and not freely available to the public, though guided tours can sometimes be arranged for interested visitors. The flat terrain and proximity to water allow for walks around the surroundings, where you can observe harbor activities and the surrounding landscape.
Since 2024, Upinniemi hosts a special U.S. anti-submarine aircraft station with P-8A planes, reflecting Finland's growing military cooperation with NATO partners. This deployment makes the base a more significant center for maritime security in the Baltic Sea.
