Imatran Valtionhotelli, hotel in Imatra, Finland
Imatran Valtionhotelli is an Art Nouveau hotel in Imatra located right beside the Imatrankoski rapids and designed by architect Usko Nyström. The building features curved lines and decorative details characteristic of its style, with high ceilings and large windows that create a bright, open interior.
The hotel was built in 1903, replacing two wooden hotels that burned down in the late 1800s. During the Finnish Civil War it served as a hospital, and in World War II it functioned as a command center for military operations and housed an air defense center in its basement.
Originally called Grand Hotel Cascade, the hotel attracted visitors from Germany and Russia who came to experience the rapids. Its name and location reflect the international significance this place held as a travel destination in the early 1900s.
The hotel offers 137 rooms total and features a free wellness area with sauna and swimming pool on the first floor. Free parking is available outside the building, and the location makes it convenient for exploring Imatra's attractions such as the nearby waterfalls and rapids.
The building is considered by many to be one of Finland's most beautiful structures and has received multiple awards, particularly around 2014 and 2017. Its history has been immortalized in local stories and fictional works, where it appears as a place of refuge and inspiration for characters.
