Trakošćan Castle

This 13th-century fortress stands elevated at 286 meters above sea level, featuring thick stone walls, defensive towers, and Neo-Gothic architectural elements added during 19th-century romantic renovations.

First documented in 1334, the castle served as a defensive observation point before becoming the residence of the Drašković noble family from 1584 until World War II.

The castle operates as a museum displaying period furniture, aristocratic portraits, and decorative arts that showcase Croatian noble lifestyle and regional craftsmanship traditions.

Located in Varaždin County near Bednja village, the castle offers guided tours, educational programs, and visitor amenities including parking facilities and exhibition spaces.

The estate features an artificial lake and English-style gardens created during the 1840-1862 romantic restoration, transforming the medieval fortress into a picturesque residential manor.
