Buzet, Town in Istria County, Croatia
Buzet is a small town in the northern part of Istria County, Croatia, built on a hill that rises above the surrounding countryside. The old town is made up of narrow lanes, stone houses, and old town walls, while the lower parts of the settlement spread along the slopes below.
Buzet has roots going back to Roman times and changed hands many times over the centuries, passing through Venetian and Habsburg rule among others. The layers of different rulers left traces in the stonework and layout of the old town that are still visible today.
Buzet is known in the region as the "city of truffles" because the forests around it are among the most productive truffle-hunting grounds in Istria. In the small restaurants of the old town, dishes made with truffles appear on nearly every menu, giving the place a strong food identity that locals take real pride in.
The old town sits at the top of the hill and is best explored on foot, as the lanes are too narrow for vehicles. Parking is available at the base of the hill, from where a short walk brings you up to the main gate.
Once a year, Buzet holds a festival where a giant truffle omelette is cooked in the main square, using a large number of eggs and locally harvested truffles. This event is what first put the town on the map for food lovers visiting Istria.
