Gacko polje

Gacko polje is a limestone valley in Lika-Senj County that spreads across a wide area between two mountain ranges. The land sits at elevations between 425 and 481 meters and forms an open landscape of fields and meadows.

This valley formed millions of years ago through tectonic movement and erosion that shaped the karst landscape of the Dinaric Alps. The Gacka River has long cut through the limestone and continues to influence the valley's water systems.

Farmers here have long grown potatoes and grains on the land, raising sheep and cattle that graze across open fields. These agricultural traditions still shape how the valley looks and how people spend their days.

The Zagreb-Ploče highway crosses the western part of the valley, making it easy to reach nearby towns. The best time to visit is during warmer months when the ground is dry and easier to walk on.

The Gacka River system in this valley includes three protected springs recognized as geological monuments since 1973. These springs support special wetland habitats and show how water moves through the limestone landscape.
