Dubovac Castle, Medieval castle in Dubovac, Karlovac, Croatia
Dubovac Castle is a stone fortress standing on a 185-meter (607 foot) hill with four corner towers surrounding a central courtyard and Renaissance architectural elements integrated throughout the structure. The complex can be explored across multiple levels from the outer walls to the inner buildings.
The fortress was built in the 13th century to protect trade routes and later changed hands between Croatian noble families such as the Frankopans and Zrinskis. These ownership changes reflect the site's strategic importance in regional politics and commerce.
The main tower houses a museum displaying regional artifacts and includes a large-scale model representing the historical landscape of the Karlovac region.
The site is best reached on foot by walking uphill from Karlovac's city center, and pathways can be steep depending on the season. Comfortable shoes are recommended since not all paths are paved.
The fortress contains a deep water well that, according to local accounts, supposedly connects through an underground passage to the Kupa River. This hidden connection features prominently in regional stories passed down through generations.
