Archaeological museum Narona, Archaeological museum in Vid, Metković, Croatia.
The Archaeological Museum Narona in Vid displays Roman sculptures, artifacts, and everyday objects in a modern building constructed over ancient ruins. The collection documents the material culture of the former port city along the Neretva River.
The museum opened in 2007 at the site of ancient Narona, which developed as an important Roman colony during the first century. The settlement served as a major trading and administrative center in the region for centuries.
The exhibition displays fifteen Roman statues and nearly 900 objects arranged to show their original positions within the temple complex. This layout helps visitors understand how the sanctuary and daily life functioned in the Roman settlement.
Entry is through the modern structure built transparently over the exposed Roman foundations, allowing the archaeological layer to remain visible. Visitors can see the ancient walls and floors directly beneath the exhibition space.
The building preserves the original Roman temple foundation walls visible beneath transparent glass, allowing visitors to study construction methods and layers spanning nearly 2000 years. This design blends archaeology and modern display in an unusual way.
