Vid, Archaeological settlement in Metković, Croatia.
Vid is a settlement in the Neretva River valley near Metković built on the site of an ancient Roman city, with temple remains and a museum housing Roman artifacts. The area features stone buildings integrated into the rolling terrain of the Dalmatian region.
The place developed on the foundations of Narona, a major Roman trading city from the 1st century BCE whose importance peaked during the early imperial period. Its archaeological layers preserve the memory of this strategic and commercial significance.
The settlement reflects its deep Roman past through temple remains and place names that echo the ancient city below. Walking through it, you notice how the modern village sits directly atop those layers of history.
The settlement is easily reached by bus from central Metković with regular service throughout the day. The museum and ruins are accessible on foot from the village and can be visited without any special equipment.
The museum displays seventeen Roman marble statues excavated from an ancient temple, with some remaining in their original positions within the main hall. These statues offer rare insight into Roman artistic and craftsmanship skills from about 2000 years ago.
