Orahovica Monastery

Orahovica Monastery is a Serbian Orthodox monastery near Orahovica, Croatia, with multiple buildings arranged around the central Church of Saint Nicholas. Residential quarters occupy both the north and south sides, with some original frescoes from the 16th century partially surviving on the interior walls.

The monastery was first recorded in 1583 under the name Remeta, serving as the seat of the Požega metropolitanate during the Ottoman period. The church building itself was constructed in 1592, marking an important moment in the site's religious and architectural development.

The monastery walls display genealogical paintings of the Nemanjić dynasty, telling the story of a royal lineage through visual art. These artistic representations remain as a testament to the spiritual and political connections the site once held.

The monastery is located in a forest valley on Papuk mountain, making it a secluded destination that requires some effort to reach. Visitors should be prepared for a quiet, traditional setting without modern conveniences in the immediate area.

The 1592 church represents the only example of Moravian school architecture found anywhere in the Slavonia region. This distinctive building style appears nowhere else locally, making it a notable exception within the broader Orthodox architectural traditions of the area.
