Rijeka City Tower, Baroque clock tower at Korzo street, Croatia.
Rijeka City Tower is a baroque structure with a yellow facade and distinctive clock positioned at the end of the central Korzo street. The building features decorative details in the baroque style and serves as a key landmark in the city center.
The structure began as a medieval gateway connecting the port to the Roman settlement of Tarsatica and was rebuilt after the 1750 earthquake. The reconstructed tower acquired its characteristic baroque form and yellow facade during this rebuilding period.
The tower displays the municipal coat of arms with a double-headed eagle granted by Emperor Leopold I Habsburg in 1659, positioned beneath its clock. This symbol reflects the city's significant role in the Habsburg administration of the region.
The tower is located at Trg Ivana Koblera and is easy to find from Korzo street, where it serves as a meeting point for residents who affectionately call it Pod uriloj. The passage beneath the tower is accessible for exploration and leads to the older part of the city.
The passage beneath the tower contains memorial inscriptions, including a signature from a medieval gothic stone mason marking the entrance to the old town. This carved mark is a rare record of the craftsman who worked on this structure centuries ago.
