Rijeka City Tower, Baroque clock tower at Korzo street, Croatia.
Rijeka City Tower is a baroque clock tower standing at the end of Korzo, the main pedestrian street in the center of Rijeka, Croatia. A vaulted passage runs through its base, connecting the Korzo side to the older part of the city behind it.
The tower began as a medieval gate that linked the port area to the old Roman settlement of Tarsatica on the hill above. It was rebuilt following an earthquake in 1750, which is when it took on its current baroque form and yellow facade.
The tower displays the city coat of arms featuring a double-headed eagle, granted by Emperor Leopold I in 1659, placed just below the clock face. Locals call the spot beneath it "Pod uriloj", meaning "under the clock", and use it as a common meeting point.
The tower stands at Trg Ivana Koblera and is easy to spot from Korzo, since it marks the visible end of the street. The passage through its base is open and free to walk through at any time, leading directly toward the old town on the other side.
Inside the passage, a carved mark left by a medieval gothic stonemason is still visible on the wall, used as a signature to identify the craftsman's work. Such marks were a common practice among medieval builders but are rarely found intact in a busy urban passage like this one.
