Saint Jerome church in Rijeka

Saint Jerome is a baroque church in central Rijeka featuring tall marble altars decorated with carved figures and religious paintings arranged around spiritual subjects. The interior was redesigned after the 1750 earthquake and displays typical baroque characteristics with pronounced decorative elements throughout.

The building was founded in 1315 by the Devin Counts for the Augustinian order and served as an important religious center for centuries. After the 1750 earthquake, the interior was completely redesigned and acquired its present baroque appearance.

The cloister displays stone slabs carved with the names and details of Rijeka's prominent families, serving as a record of those who shaped the city. These inscribed memorials reveal how the community honored its leaders across generations.

The church is located near the central square and is easily accessible on foot from most parts of the city center. Visitors can enter during opening hours to view the interior decorations, marble altars, and the historic stone slabs in the cloister.

The 1744 altarpiece by Antonio Michelazzi includes in its background a rare historical depiction of Rijeka as it appeared in that era. This painted view provides a window into how the city looked during the mid-18th century.
