Capuchin Church of Our Lady of Lourdes, Roman Catholic church in Žabica district, Rijeka, Croatia
The Capuchin Church of Our Lady of Lourdes is a church building in the Žabica district with a neo-Gothic facade made of mosaics and stone details. The structure has two levels stacked vertically, with the lower church serving as a foundation layer and the upper church functioning as the main basilica featuring three naves.
Construction started in 1904 under the leadership of Provincial Bernardin Škrivanić, with the lower church completed in 1908 and dedicated to Mary as the Consoler of Souls. This dedication year represented a significant milestone for the religious community in the area.
The interior artwork reflects both imported artistic traditions and local craftsmanship coming together in one space. Visitors notice how ceiling paintings sit alongside stonework created by artisans from the city itself, creating a blend of outside skill and regional pride.
Visits work best during daylight hours when light comes through the windows to show the interior decoration clearly. The entrance is accessed from the facade side, and visitors should dress respectfully as this is an active place of worship.
The church's construction was funded largely by pilgrims drawn to reports of a holy person who allegedly bled while workers were laying the tower foundation. This unusual occurrence created a stream of donations that supported the building's completion.
