Sockerbrukspalatset, Rijeka, Baroque palace and city museum in Brajda, Rijeka, Croatia

The Sockerbrukspalatset, known locally as Palača šećerane or palača Zuccheriera, is a Baroque palace of 1752 facing Rijeka's railway station in the Brajda quarter. Built as the administrative building of the sugar refinery, it was rebuilt after a 1785 fire with stuccowork, wall paintings and ceramic stoves. Its interior holds mythological scenes that lay hidden under seven layers of paint.

Built in 1752 as the administrative building of Rijeka's sugar refinery, on the initiative of the Privileged Trieste-Rijeka Company, the palace stands opposite the railway station in the Brajda district. After a fire in 1785 it was substantially rebuilt and fitted with Baroque interiors, wall paintings and stucco. From 1832 to 1848 it served as a Hungarian barracks, then housed the tobacco factory administration until 1945, when it became the seat of the Rikard Benčić engine works.

The Museum of the City of Rijeka has occupied the palace since 2020. Its permanent display, designed by Nikolina Jelavić Mitrović, fills more than 30 rooms on two floors. The first floor follows the city's modern history from 1719 to 2020; the second, called "The Sweet History of Rijeka", covers the sugar refinery, the tobacco factory and the Rikard Benčić engine works, with a glass case of sugar loaves.

The permanent exhibition occupies more than 30 rooms on the first and second floors: the first floor covers the city's history, the second the "Sweet History of Rijeka" and the sugar refinery, tobacco factory and Rikard Benčić engine works. The palace faces the railway station in the Brajda district. A lift for visitors and a lift for museum material were installed, and the building is fully adapted for wheelchair users, with an evacuation staircase on the east facade.

The palace's second floor is devoted to the "Sweet History of Rijeka", tracing the site from sugar refinery to tobacco factory to the Rikard Benčić engine works. One hall holds a glass case filled with sugar loaves of the kind once produced here.
