Rijeka Orthodox Synagogue

The Rijeka Orthodox Synagogue is a rationalist building featuring a three-part facade of red brick and stone bands that frame two separate entrances. Inside, a raised women's gallery runs along the upper level overlooking the main prayer space, following traditional Orthodox Jewish design principles.

The building was erected in 1931 when the city was under Italian administration, marking an important moment for the Jewish community in Rijeka. It survived the Second World War by being repurposed, though its story of survival reflects the resilience of those who maintained their connection to it.

This building was the center of the Jewish community in the city and hosted gatherings that brought people together for both religious and social purposes. It reflects a chapter of Jewish life on the Adriatic coast that shaped the community's identity for generations.

An Italian marble fixture was donated in 1934 by the Jewish community of Trieste and still houses the sacred Torah scrolls today. This gift created a lasting connection between communities on opposite sides of the Adriatic Sea.
