St. Nicholas Fortress

The triangular fortress rises from water at the entrance of Šibenik's port, connected to land by a narrow walkway above sea level.

Built between 1540 and 1547 by Venetian architect Giangirolamo Sanmicheli, the fortress replaced a Benedictine monastery to defend against Turkish naval attacks.

The fortress represents a major example of Renaissance military architecture, featuring 32 cannon positions and walls constructed from brick for durability.

Access to the fortress requires joining organized boat tours from Šibenik waterfront, with tickets available during the tourism season through Public Institution Nature.

The structure maintains its original triangular layout with thick stone walls, standing guard at the narrow sea entrance to Šibenik for over 470 years.
