Built in the 12th century, the castle gained prominence in 1243 when King Bela IV highlighted its strategic importance during the Mongol invasion.

Local residents who provided plums to King Bela IV and his entourage during the Mongol siege received noble titles and became known as 'Sljivari'.

The castle ruins require careful navigation of uneven terrain, with access paths available from nearby towns through marked hiking trails.

The fortress walls contain elements from multiple architectural periods, including Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque styles, with remains of St. Catherine's chapel.
