Vrgorsko polje, Karst field in Dalmatia, Croatia
Vrgorsko polje is a karst field in Dalmatia that spreads across the landscape between Vrgorac and Ploče. The Matica River flows through this plain, fed by several natural springs and eventually disappearing into sinkholes at the field's southeastern end.
The field was historically known as Jezero, meaning lake, because it flooded regularly before modern drainage solutions. A drainage tunnel built in 1938 transformed seasonal waterlogging into permanent farmland.
Regional farmers maintain traditional agricultural practices by cultivating strawberries, cereals, vines, tobacco, and vegetables across 28.4 square kilometers of fertile land.
The Zagreb-Ploče highway runs along the northern edge and provides easy access to the field. The terrain is flat and mostly open, making it straightforward to explore on foot or by vehicle.
The field is fed by several estavelas, natural springs that emerge from underground, including Mrtva, Studena, and Lukovac. These visible spring points reveal the hidden water systems of the karst landscape beneath the surface.
