The Čiovo bridge is a steel structure that links Trogir to the island of Čiovo, serving both vehicle and foot traffic across the water. Its middle section can be lifted to allow boats to pass underneath when needed.
A second bridge to Čiovo was planned from the late 1960s, after the 1964 bridge proved too small in summer. Hrvatske ceste signed with Viadukt in 2015, but steel-delivery problems bankrupted the Macedonian subcontractor and Viadukt; the contract was terminated and Strabag finished the bridge. It opened on 17 July 2018, with Prime Minister Andrej Plenković present, costing 207 million kunas, 85% from EU funds.
The bridge is officially named Most hrvatskih branitelja, the Bridge of Croatian Defenders. It is a lifting bridge: its steel deck rises to let tall vessels reach the eastern part of Trogir harbour, between the old and new bridges. Traffic lights at both ends show when the span is raised.
The bridge carries the D126 road and has a 2.45 m cycle path and footpath on each side of the 7.1 m carriageway. Roundabouts at both bridgeheads link it to local roads; on the north it connects to the D8 Adriatic highway. Traffic lights at each end signal when the span is raised for vessels.
The bridge features a movable middle section that can be raised when sailboats or other watercraft need to pass underneath. This bascule design is common for modern connections between mainland and islands in the region.
