Španjola Fortress, Military fortress on hilltop in Hvar, Croatia.
Španjola Fortress is a fortified structure standing on a hilltop above Hvar that brings together several defensive and residential elements in one complex. Four circular bastions protect a central tower, while a chapel, armory, water storage areas, and prison cells fill out the interior spaces.
Construction started in 1278 under Venetian control as a basic defensive structure. A major rebuilding around 1551 reinforced its defenses and expanded its size to meet new military threats of the time.
The fortress displays objects from different periods that show how people lived and worked in this fortified place. These items reveal stories of trade, daily life, and the connection between the stronghold and the surrounding community.
The climb from Hvar's center follows marked paths that pass historic buildings and take some effort but reward visitors with views once reached. Good footwear and comfortable clothing help make the walk easier, and the effort is worthwhile for the perspective gained from above.
A lightning strike in 1579 hit the gunpowder magazine and caused an explosion that damaged much of the structure. The fact that officials invested resources to repair and strengthen it afterwards shows how central it was to regional security.
