Szombathely

Szombathely sits along the Gyöngyös and Perint streams where the Alpokalja mountains transition into the Little Hungarian Plain at 209 meters elevation. The city spreads across several kilometers, connecting old quarters with newer residential areas through wide streets and green spaces.

The settlement was founded in 43 AD as Savaria and served as capital of the province Pannonia Superior. During Roman times, an imperial residence with public baths was built here, underlining its status as an important administrative center.

The name comes from traditional Saturday market days that have shaped local commerce for centuries. Visitors notice Roman ruins alongside baroque churches and modern buildings throughout the city, visibly connecting different eras.

As the tenth largest city in Hungary, the place offers good transport connections through its location near the Austrian border with developed rail and road networks. The center is easily walkable, while public buses reach the outer districts.

Saint Martin of Tours was born here when the place was still known as Savaria. His birth in this Roman provincial capital connected early Christianity with the imperial structures of the time.
