Sándor Weöres Theatre, Modern theatre in Szombathely, Hungary
The Sándor Weöres Theatre is a theatre in Szombathely, Hungary, built with a glass facade and wooden interior panels that give the inside a warm tone. It has two main performance spaces: the Main Stage and the Márkus Emília Hall.
A stone theatre stood on this site from 1880 until a fire destroyed it in 1907, leaving the city without a permanent home for theatre for many decades. The current building opened in 2009, bringing theatre back to the same location after a long absence.
The theatre is named after Sándor Weöres, a Hungarian poet known for his playful and imaginative writing style. The building is used not only for performances but also for exhibitions and events that bring together different parts of the local arts scene.
The theatre sits close to the Sports House in central Szombathely and can be reached on foot from most parts of the city centre. It is worth checking what is on before you visit, as the programme changes throughout the year.
The roofline of the building was designed to follow the shape of the tree crowns growing around it, giving the exterior a curved silhouette that changes depending on the angle from which you look at it. This makes the building appear different from the street compared to an aerial view.
