Pomáz, town in Hungary
Pomáz is a town in the Szentendre District of Hungary, situated northwest of Budapest at the edge of the Pilis hills. Its streets run between traditional houses with gardens and several churches, and the surrounding hills are covered with trees.
The area around Pomáz was already settled in Roman times, and a village grew here through the medieval period. In the late 18th century, the noble Teleki-Wattay family built a baroque castle that became the most prominent structure in the town.
The Serbian Orthodox Church of Saint George is a visible reminder that a Serbian community has lived here since Ottoman times. Walking through the town, visitors can notice this mix of religious buildings belonging to different communities, all within a short distance of each other.
Pomáz is easy to reach from Budapest by suburban rail without needing a car. The town center is small enough to explore on foot, and those who want to walk into the surrounding hills should wear comfortable shoes.
After World War II the Teleki-Wattay Castle was turned into a children's home, and it later became a choral music center known as the Choral Castle. Choirs from across Europe now travel to rehearse and perform there, giving the old noble residence a very different purpose from the one it was built for.
