Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport, International airport in Pest, Hungary
Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport is an international airport in Pest, Hungary, made up of two passenger terminals, 2A and 2B, joined by the central SkyCourt building. This central structure houses shops, restaurants, and service areas for travelers passing through.
The facility began operations in 1943 and underwent major reconstruction following the Second World War. It officially opened for civil aviation in May 1950 and has grown into the main Hungarian air hub since then.
The airport bears the name of the famous Hungarian composer Ferenc Liszt, who was born exactly two centuries before the renaming took place in 2011. This shift from the former neutral designation Ferihegy marked a move toward a name carrying national cultural weight.
The facility sits roughly 16 kilometers southeast of downtown Budapest and can be reached by express bus 100E, regular bus lines, and authorized taxis. Travelers should allow between 30 and 60 minutes for the journey to the center depending on traffic.
Terminal 2 has an observation deck where visitors can watch aircraft taking off and landing. Information panels explain details about flight routes, plane types, and activities on the apron below.
