Sas Hill

Sas Hill is a protected natural area in Budapest that rises to about 266 meters. From its summit, visitors have wide views across the city to Buda Castle and Gellért Hill.

The hill was named in 1847 by Hungarian philologist Gábor Döbrentei, replacing its earlier German name. This renaming reflected the growing push to strengthen Hungarian identity during that era.

The hill was part of Buda's wine-growing region during the 18th and 19th centuries before disease ended that tradition. Visitors can still see traces of abandoned vineyards on the slopes.

The site lies within Danube-Ipoly National Park and has good walking trails with informative signs about local wildlife and plants. Spring and autumn offer the most pleasant conditions for a visit and exploration.

The area contains concrete military bunkers from World War II hidden beneath forest and shrubland. These wartime structures coexist today with the protected habitat and its rare plant and animal species.
