Szigliget Castle

Szigliget Castle is a castle ruin situated on Várhegy hill at approximately 239 meters elevation, offering views across Lake Balaton and the surrounding Tapolca Basin. The structure comprises stone foundations and wall remains standing in the open air, with courtyards and exhibition spaces accessible to visitors.

A Benedictine abbot named Favus from Pannonhalma built this fortress between 1260 and 1262 as a defensive installation in this strategically important region. The structure remained in active use for several centuries before being abandoned in the late 1600s.

The fortress held deep significance as a protective landmark for communities around Lake Balaton through the medieval centuries. Today visitors can see weapons and armor in the museum that reveal how central this place was to the region's sense of security and identity.

Visitors can reach the ruins via marked hiking paths that lead uphill from the village and are relatively straightforward to follow. Sturdy footwear and some extra time for exploration are recommended, as the ground is uneven and certain sections of the path grow quite steep.

Recent restoration efforts have uncovered original architectural elements that had been buried beneath layers of earth and rubble for centuries. These discoveries provide insight into how medieval builders worked and allow visitors to see sections of the fortress that would otherwise remain completely hidden.
