Győr Synagogue, Art Nouveau synagogue in Győr, Hungary
Győr Synagogue is a former synagogue at Kossuth Lajos utca 5 in the Újváros district, built in late Historicist and Art Nouveau style. Its main façade, flanked by two towers topped with cupolas, features a large round window. The two-storey interior is dominated by a painted dome 14 metres in diameter, rising 30 metres above the floor, with 400 seats.
The synagogue was built in 1870 and represents the growing influence of Jewish professionals such as lawyers and bankers of German and Moravian origin. The building documents the important role the Jewish community played in the city's economic and social development.
The building is run jointly by Széchenyi István University and the City Art Museum. Its acoustics are used for concerts, museum lectures, guided tours and music events, and since July 2024 it has housed the Exhibition of Jewish Excellence, with more than 400 Nobel laureates and other figures presented in Hungarian, English and Hebrew.
The synagogue stands at Kossuth Lajos utca 5 in the Újváros district, on the western bank of the Rába. The building is shared by Széchenyi István University and the City Art Museum, which run the permanent exhibition on Jewish excellence opened in July 2024; temporary shows and guided tours are added to it.
