Győr Synagogue

Győr Synagogue is an Art Nouveau building with a large gray dome supported by massive bronze pillars. The interior displays eastern-inspired decorations adorning the galleries and beams, reflecting the elegant style of the period.

The synagogue was built in 1870 and represents the growing influence of Jewish professionals such as lawyers and bankers of German and Moravian origin. The building documents the important role the Jewish community played in the city's economic and social development.

The building hosts the annual Mediawave cultural festival, which brings international films, performances, and concerts ranging from folk music to jazz into the historic space. The event program draws visitors from across the region throughout the year.

The building is located on Kossuth Lajos Street 5 and is open to visitors. The best time to visit is from Wednesday through Sunday when regular visiting hours apply.

A former school building that once belonged to the synagogue complex now houses the Széchényi art high school. This repurposing preserves the educational tradition of the site while showing how historic buildings continue to serve the community.
