Jurisics Castle, Medieval fortress in Kőszeg, Hungary
Jurisics Castle is a medieval fortress in the heart of Kőszeg, Hungary, made up of an outer and an inner section separated by a moat. Gothic frescos survive in the northern part, and Renaissance paintings decorate the window surrounds of the inner courtyard.
The fortress was built during the medieval period and grew over the centuries through additions and rebuilding phases into the complex it is today. It takes its name from Nikola Jurišić, the commander who held it against Ottoman forces in 1532.
The castle holds collections about medieval weapons and local history that show the connection between the Hungarian crown and Kőszeg. Visitors can see how the town preserves and presents its past through these displays.
The castle sits in Kőszeg's historic center and is easy to reach on foot from anywhere in the old town. The inner courtyard has a stage used for performances throughout the year, so the visit can take on a different feel depending on when you go.
The bells of Kőszeg ring every day at 11 o'clock instead of noon to mark the moment when Ottoman troops withdrew in 1532. This habit has continued without interruption and is still part of the town's daily rhythm today.
