Vas-hegy, Geographical small region in Vas County, Hungary
Vas-hegy is a mountain range straddling the Hungary-Austria border, marked by a dramatic gorge carved by the Pinka River through its core. The landscape transitions between steep wooded slopes and rocky outcrops where the river cuts through the bedrock.
During the Roman period, the area was mined for mineral extraction, but residents gradually shifted to cultivating vineyards as the empire declined. This transition from mining to winemaking became the foundation for the region's place within the Sopron wine district.
Wine cellars carved into the hillsides and small roadside chapels dot the region, reflecting how residents have shaped their daily lives around agriculture and faith.
The region is accessible by road 89 toward Narda or from the northern route 8714 starting at Pornóapáti. Hikers should check locally about trail conditions and any seasonal restrictions that may affect access through the gorge.
The mountain range contains rare mineral deposits including citrine, olivine, and magnetite formed during different geological periods. These mineral layers tell the story of ancient changes to the Earth's crust in this border zone.
